Fronted by charismatic singer Adam Duritz, Counting Crows came out of the Bay Area in the early ‘90s with a classic-rock-influenced sound that couldn't have been more out of fashion in the era of grunge. But that helped them separate from the pack, and the band's 1993 debut album, August and Everything After, earned them huge success. Though Counting Crows have gone through quite a few line-up changes throughout the years, they've maintained their ever-devoted fanbase and, with Duritz at the helm, their signature sound.

Raised in Texas, the free jazz icon Ornette Coleman got his start in the late '40s playing with a touring R&B ensemble. The saxophonist notched his solo debut with 1958's Something Else!!!!, a blues-tinged album that also featured the supporting talents of Don Cherry and Billy Higgins. As he hit his stride with projects like <I>The Shape of Jazz to Come and Change of the Century, Coleman began to refine his radical free jazz movement. Showing the breadth of his talent, he moved into the classical and world music scenes in the '70s and '80s.

Justin Vernon's solitary attempt at capturing loneliness in his father's Wisconsin cabin on '07 debut, For Emma, Forever Ago, established him as an indie darling. But it was when he fleshed out his introspective folksy sound with a full band and lush arrangements that his Bon Iver vehicle became a bona fide GRAMMY®-winning sensation. Vernon has since showcased his unique falsetto on collaborations with James Blake and Kanye West, and has even started his own Eau Claire music festival with The National guitarist Aaron Dessner.
