’70s Love Song Essentials - The ‘70s: a decadent decade of rock and disco excess. But in amongst the madness, a catalogue of beautiful odes to love. And no genre was safe from falling hard. There's open-hearted country, sensual disco, stylish soul and widescreen rock ballads. All still as soppy as the day they were written.

’70s Country Essentials - Country music in the ‘70s was like a winding trail through the wilderness, with many overlapping paths—on one hand, it was the heyday of the outlaw movement, with rough-hewn rebels like Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson delivering raw, gritty lone-wolf sagas. On the other, the lush countrypolitan sound reached its zenith with country-pop crossover artists like Charlie Rich and Crystal Gayle ruling the charts. Of course, there was room for plenty of other sounds between those two extremes, be it Dolly Parton's bluegrass-speckled progressive country or Don Williams' gentle traditionalism.

’60 Psychedelic Essentials - As the ‘60s counterculture expanded beyond early epicentres like the corner of Haight and Ashbury in San Francisco and the UFO Club in London to become a mass youth movement, its influence on the era’s music became more pervasive. Everyone from music’s biggest stars to the underground’s most adventurous acts sought to expand sonic frontiers in the same way that marijuana and LSD expanded their impressionable minds. The Beatles led the way by reinventing the studio as a playground, experimenting with new multitrack technology to create the hallucinatory likes of “Tomorrow Never Knows”. Young guitar heroes like Jimi Hendrix and the Grateful Dead’s Jerry Garcia drew inspiration from free jazz and raga to create captivating spirals of sound. Even the bubblegum pop of The Lemon Pipers took a trippy direction thanks to the wah-wah pedals, phasing tricks and other effects that continue to trigger the best kinds of flashbacks.
