Depeche Mode ruled the ‘80s and ‘90s with their danceable techno-pop hits, synth-based arrangements, and provocative lyrics. Even amid band drama, the commercial and critical success of the group was never in question. A huge range of artists have been inspired by the band's dark grooves, from the industrial attack of Nine Inch Nails to the understated electro-pop of The Postal Service and ‘90s British alt-rockers Placebo and Elastica.

Combining punk chops, glam attitude, and a fondness for B-movie schlock, Bauhaus' debut album established them as gothic crown princes. Their reign only lasted a few short years, but the ghoulish quartet cast a long shadow. Metal and industrial acts like Rob Zombie and Nine Inch Nails picked up on their menace, while indie bands like Mogwai and Savages channeled their stormy atmospheres.

Largely responsible for the post-punk revival, Interpol have always worn their influences on their sleeves, acknowledging the forces that shaped their sound. And why shy away from the likes of The Cure, Talking Heads, and Joy Division? The late '70s and early '80s were particularly fertile musical grounds, and Interpol made no secret of their love for bands like The Smiths and New Order.

Without producer, recording artist, and Mute Records founder Daniel Miller, modern music would sound very different and synthpop might never have happened at all. Besides creating some of the earliest electropop as one-man band The Normal in the late '70s, he also produced Depeche Mode and signed Yaz. Miller continues releasing vibrant, groundbreaking music through Mute today.

Music warps in Wire's hands. They are principally hailed for artfully scuffed jitter-punk such as 1978's “Heartbeat,” although their excursions into declarative industrial scree and driving lofty rock—such as “Drill” and “No Warning Given”—show that their true ongoing mission is to test the sonic structure of post-Bowie pop music.
