The ’90s was a revolutionary time in R&B: Not only had the mature, quiet-storm-oriented sound evolved to its most sophisticated state, you started to really hear the influence of hip-hop—a shift that changed not only R&B, but the sound of modern pop in general. From neo-soul to new jack swing, the classic-sounding to the more cutting-edge, these are the tracks that shaped R&B in the ’90s and early 2000s. At the turn of the new millennium, the revolutionary forces of Latin pop reached critical mass. Though 1999 marked a big moment for the genre—with Marc Anthony, Ricky Martin, and Jennifer Lopez leading the U.S. Latin-pop explosion—it also spawned numerous new scenes and subcultures. In Puerto Rico, the maximalist reggaetón of Daddy Yankee fueled a <I>perreo</I> frenzy beyond the Caribbean, and Calle 13 flipped the style further with their pedagogic lyrics and a riveting fusion of tribal alt-rock. In Colombia, the psych-punk brilliance of electronic cumbia band Bomba Estéreo blew up; and a young troupe of Bronx-born Dominicans named Aventura retraced their roots, taking bachata—a once-rural folk form—to mainstream prominence. Mexican singer/songwriter Julieta Venegas created some of the most relatable love songs of the decade over perfect pop hooks. And iconic innovators Nortec Collective, concocting a clever fusion of techno with a norteño pulse, gave Tijuana a now-legendary soundtrack of its own.

Mexican singer/actress Anahí appeared on the children’s show <I>Chiquilladas</I>, advertised a cola, acted in telenovelas and released her first album—all before the age of 11. But it was her star turn in <I>Rebelde</I>, a 2004-06 telenovela about private-school teens, that launched her as a global pop star. RBD, the show’s spin-off pop-rock band, was an international sensation, and Anahí parlayed that into a solo career that deftly mixes balladry and sparkling dance pop. The singer married the governor of Chiapas in 2015 and had her first child in 2017 before returning to music in 2020 with “Latidos”, a heartfelt song for her son.

For as much boundary pushing as there is in modern Latin pop, there are also plenty of artists young and otherwise keeping classic sounds alive, from ballads to synth-pop to rock. Maybe it’s the music of your youth. Maybe you just like it that way. Whatever the case, this is where you’ll find it.
