Outkast Essentials - Bringing psychedelic depth and other distinctive touches to the vibrant Southern rap scene, the Atlanta duo of André Benjamin (aka André 3000) and Antwan Patton (Big Boi) raised the bar for originality and creativity in the ’90s and beyond. Their silky 1993 debut single “Player’s Ball” provided a coming-of-age depiction of the pimps, rides, and aura of their hood, while still tipping its broad-brimmed hat to Curtis Mayfield. The pair developed their thick drawls and lucid lyrics on 1996’s “ATLiens,” celebrating their place on the map as well as contrasting idiosyncrasies including Patton’s pimp persona and Benjamin’s rejection of illicit substances. Then came 1999’s “Rosa Parks,” a low-riding hybrid of civil rights allusions, down-home interludes, and trippy flourishes that became a lasting calling card for their third album. Aquemini later made it on to Apple Music’s 100 Best Albums list, with its watery title track typifying Outkast’s growing surrealism.

The duo’s 2000 opus Stankonia became their long-predicted crossover success, thanks to Benjamin’s tender rap ballad apologizing to his ex’s mother. “Ms. Jackson” went multiplatinum in multiple countries, while “So Fresh, So Clean” and “B.O.B. (Bombs Over Baghdad)” showcased the sharpness of Outkast’s pop sensibilities and political commentary, respectively. They also introduced the mainstream to Killer Mike a full decade before Run The Jewels with 2001’s “The Whole World.” The pair had it both ways with 2003’s Speakerboxxx/The Love Below, a double album that reinforced their contrasting approaches while still brimming with smashes like the deliriously catchy “Hey Ya!” and the classically sultry “The Way You Move.” That was their last non-soundtrack album together, but Benjamin and Patton’s quite divergent paths post-Outkast have nonetheless kept fans dreaming that they’ll find their way back to each other.

Protoje Essentials - The son of two singers, Protoje makes music that draws from the deep well of reggae tradition, invigorating the genre with bright ‘10s production and tight flows influenced by hip-hop. On "Who Knows," he works with like-minded singer Chronixx to create a "Jamrock"-esque anthem that pairs laidback lyrics with unrelenting low end. "Rasta Love” has him teaming up with Ky-Mani Marley for a slow, slinky ballad—almost R&B—about a girl who goes Garveyite after meeting a new man. "This Is Not a Marijuana Song," meanwhile, shows Protoje's more playful side, with the singer participating in a reggae tradition while also sending it up.
