“Music is better/When we’re together,” reminds the chorus of RÜFÜS DU SOL’s 2024 single “Music Is Better.” That sentiment is an affectionate nod to how the members of the Sydney-formed trio—Tyrone Lindqvist, Jon George, and James Hunt—began reconvening in person for a fortnight here and there to work on new material while living in different cities. “We really made the most of those two-week stints,” George tells Apple Music’s Zane Lowe. “We were in a really good creative flow.” Maintaining that flow is crucial for an act that first blossomed from the Australian dance scene in 2010. After establishing a winning template of Hunt’s kinetic beats, George’s bubbly keyboards, and Lindqvist’s sweet vocal yearning—as heard on their 2013 breakthrough “Take Me”—the trio absorbed Berlin’s club culture while recording 2016’s <i>Bloom</i> there. That album yielded a series of multiplatinum hits at home, including the euphoric “You Were Right.” The 2018 single “Underwater” is more introspective by comparison, while 2021’s “On My Knees” relished newfound darkness. RÜFÜS DU SOL swung back to brightness with the aforementioned “Music Is Better,” a highlight of their forward-looking 2024 album <i>Inhale / Exhale</i>. “We’ve been pushing the boundaries of what the expressions of our music looks like,” Hunt told Lowe. That thirst for the new portends an exciting future for a band that has never stayed in one place, musically or geographically.
