Falling upon the expansive roots rock of Matthew Houck, a.k.a. Phosphorescent, is like falling onto a bed of clouds. Houck makes dreamy, intricate songs that land somewhere between the heartland country and hymn-like folk that have long inhabited the Deep South, yet they're effortlessly hip and of-the-moment. His world-weary voice is infused with ragged optimism and powered by an emotional charge that comes straight out of soul music; like Houck's moniker, some would even say it glows.

A powerful new voice in Americana, Brandi Carlile made an indelible impression with 2007’s raw-throated love song “The Story”, later covered by both LeAnn Rimes and Dolly Parton. Since then, she has displayed a songwriting sensibility steeped in folk and country traditions while also reflective of her creative restlessness and her identity as one of roots music’s most prominent LGBTQ+ artists. Her gritty but nimble pipes fuel her poignant, down-home songwriting on tunes like 2014’s “The Eye”, where she howls to a troubled lover over sparse, fingerpicked guitar, and 2017’s “The Joke”, a prescient song for the times about not giving in to bullies or pessimism. Carlile continues to disregard obvious boundaries between genres, baring the contents of her head and heart with a voice equally capable of conveying desperate urgency, stark intimacy and gale-force-wind bravado. Witness 2021’s electrifying “Broken Horses”, which won her two of her many Grammys. And after co-founding country supergroup The Highwomen, she teamed up with her formative influence Elton John for the 2025 album <i>Who Believes In Angels?</i>. “I’ve been singing with Elton all my life,” she told Apple Music. “He just didn’t know it until about 10 or 20 years ago.” Going toe to toe with that musical titan proves just how far Carlile has come since debuting in the mid-2000s.

Though Leonard Cohen often existed on the fringes of pop culture, his literate, sardonic songs inspired artists across the spectrum of modern music for decades. He's had a profound impact on several iconic bands, including U2 and R.E.M., and also influenced generations of indie singer/songwriters, from cult heroes like Cat Power to mainstream stars such as Tori Amos.

Don't let that angelic voice fool you—Phoebe Bridgers can throw down a scathing takedown of a former lover or confess her greatest insecurities with a self-awareness well beyond her years. The LA-based singer-songwriter has been spinning introspective folk with airy pop since she was a teenager and has quickly grown into a leading voice in indie music. Beyond her solo work, Bridgers is just as much a sought-after collaborator, most notably with super-trio boygenius, as well as artists like Lord Huron, whom she joins on the haunting “The Night We Met”, and Conor Oberst, her ideal foil for Better Oblivion Community Center.

New Hampshire-born singer/songwriter Ray LaMontagne personifies the mysterious yet tender troubadour. After years performing at local venues, he released his debut album, Trouble, in 2004. Since then, he's freely experimented with Southern soul, roots rock, electric blues and psychedelia. But it's LaMontagne's guttural voice, coated with a Van Morrison-esque rasp, that'll hit you the hardest. Add to that his six-string virtuosity—the foundation for his warmest ballads and most cinematic anthems—and prepare to encounter love in its greatest and bleakest forms.

Melancholia sweeps through Novo Amor’s intimate indie folk almost as if it’s another instrument. That’s not to say that every song is sad—but rather reflective. It was a breakup, after all, that inspired singer-songwriter-producer Ali John Meredith-Lacey (born in 1991 in Wales) to go by the alias Novo Amor, meaning “new love” in Portuguese. Along with frequent collaborations with English multi-instrumentalist Ed Tullett (a.k.a. Lowswimmer)—including the pair’s haunting 2017 acoustic album <i>Heiress</i>—Meredith-Lacey is a powerful presence on his own, harnessing beauty and pain with lush instrumentation and a falsetto that soothes like a lullaby. Even when he steps aside from the mic, as on his 2022 ambient album, <i>Antarctican Dream Machine</i>, he designs sound with a stunning sense of place and poignancy.

Throwback R&B luminary Leon Bridges merges undeniable vintage-soul chops with modern stylistic gestures, presenting his fans with fresh challenges on every release. Nostalgic sounds are his specialty, and have been since the release of his debut album, <i>Coming Home</i>, in 2015, which included breakout singles like the enduring gospel-tinged soundtrack favorite “River.” But as his profile has risen, the Atlanta-born and Fort Worth-based singer has shown his penchant for collaboration with artists from across the music industry. These include meetings of the mind with R&B and hip-hop stars (DeJ Loaf’s “Liberated” and the Jazmine Sullivan-featuring “Summer Rain”), indie darlings Khruangbin (the <i>Texas Sun</i> and <i>Texas Moon</i> EPs), and country icon Miranda Lambert (“If You Were Mine”).

Individually gifted, Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel possess complementary talents—supple tenors, wry observational skills—that sound transcendent in harmony. An early pop collaboration laid the foundation for their late-'60s acme as purveyors of achingly poetic, hushed folk. With the breezy jangle and arch lyrics of “Mrs. Robinson”, the gentle bop of “Cecilia” and the plangent, soulful “Bridge Over Troubled Water”, the duo bridged coffeehouse folk and earthy rock, expressing the ethos of a generation that shunned the soft-focus conservatism of the '50s in favour of liberation and civil unease.
