The Cure's songs are defined by the worried sincerity of Robert Smith's voice, whether framed by the scratchy New Wave of their late ‘70s youth or the delicate, giddy gothic pop of their ‘80s pomp. It's such a singular sound, even his classic rock covers and vocal collaborations with artists like Crystal Castles and Blink-182 end up sounding just like The Cure.

With its gloomy lyrics and greyscale tones, goth is as much an aesthetic as it is a musical approach. That’s largely because late-’70s genre originators The Cure, Siouxsie & The Banshees and Bauhaus leaned into post-punk’s darkest tendencies without sugarcoating the bleakness. However, goth has never been cloistered from trends—fashionable fans and bands alike soaked up inspiration at London’s Batcave club night in the early ’80s—and its black moods aren’t monolithic. Grinding noise rock, pulsating synth-pop, operatic vocals, haunting world music and even greasy blues riffs—they’re all considered goth in the right hands.

Peter Murphy got his start fronting the seminal goth band Bauhaus. After their 1983 breakup, he collaborated with bassist Mick Karn in Dali's Car and issued a sure-footed solo debut LP. His career hit its stride with 1988's simmering Love Hysteria and the next year's Deep. With the lush, Peter Gabriel–produced Cascade (1995) and the stunning Dust (2002), Murphy tackled everything from soaring dark pop to Turkish folk. In 2013, he celebrated 35 years of Bauhaus with a world tour and followed that with his 10th solo album, the lauded Lion.

Beyond the hits, who is Peter Murphy deep down? Is he the post-punk hellion breathing new fire into T. Rex's “Telegram Sam”? The arch art rocker darting gracefully around Mick Karn's fluttering fretless bass in side project Dalis Car (the quirky “His Box”)? Combining punk chops, glam attitude and a fondness for B-movie schlock, Bauhaus' debut album established them as gothic crown princes. Their reign only lasted a few short years, but the ghoulish quartet cast a long shadow. Metal and industrial acts like Rob Zombie and Nine Inch Nails picked up on their menace, while indie bands like Mogwai and Savages channelled their stormy atmospheres.
