Although the definition of “dance pop” expanded and shifted throughout the 2010s, its ability to get bodies moving never waned. As the decade began, electro-pop was a chart-ruling force, with artists such as Lady Gaga and Kesha ruling dance floors with beat-heavy, hook-studded hits. The rise of EDM led to more crossover between the clubs and the charts, with superstar DJs like Zedd hooking up with A-listers to create massive hits. Dance pop also became more global in the 2010s, with Bad Bunny, PSY and others opening English-speaking listeners’ ears to the idea that beat-heavy pop is a truly global language.

The only rule for pop in the ‘10s? Trusting your instincts can do wonders for your star power. Take Lady Gaga, who shape-shifted from hard-edged diva to big-voiced balladeer multiple times during the decade, or Ariana Grande, who kept fans guessing with surprise drops and coded lyrics. The 2010s were a wild time on the charts, with pop divas, hip-hop stars and guitar-strumming crooners all making their own way to the top. Adele belted her way through heartbreak and triumph; Drake got in his feelings over street-sourced beats; Taylor Swift shared her innermost thoughts with millions; and Shawn Mendes made the leap from viral-video star to world-conquering pop icon. Groups hit it big, too, whether they were singing in sweet harmony like the boy banders of One Direction or revamping themselves alongside the times like the soul-poppers in Maroon 5.

Armed with a mesmerising soprano, Ariana Grande began her career as a child star on Broadway and Nickelodeon before evolving into a pop and R&B powerhouse. Across albums and hit singles—starting with 2013’s R&B jam “The Way” (featuring Mac Miller) and expanding into EDM with Zedd’s “Break Free”, retro-soul on “Dangerous Woman” and diva trap-pop like “7 Rings”—she has consistently commanded the spotlight while using her stardom for activism. Grande’s pop journey has grown inward, using music as a therapeutic tool for spiritual growth. The Max Martin-produced “no tears left to cry”, which followed a deadly attack at one of her 2017 concerts, offered hope and healing.
