Alice Cooper's shock-rock reputation can overshadow one of the most playfully eclectic discographies of the '70s, as he veered from glam-kissed power-pop boogie (“Escape”) to jazzy, Doors-inspired detours (“Blue Turk”). But as his tarted-up theatrics gave rise to the pop-metal androgynes of the ‘80s, Alice one-upped his Sunset Strip progeny in the nastiness department with the fiery, fist-pumping “Freedom” and the sleazy “Snakebite.”

Storming the hard rock scene in the late '70s, Van Halen combined the crunchy hooks of The Who, the ultra-heavy riffs of Black Sabbath, the driving rhythms of Cream, and the virtuoso shredding of Jimi Hendrix to create their explosive sound. Featuring tracks that inspired Van Halen's arena-sized anthems, this collection will get your fists pumping and your head banging.

If one were to definitively name the golden age of the guitar riff, it'd be tough to argue against the ‘70s, when the lean rock ‘n' roll of the late ‘60s met the rise of heavy metal. Led Zeppelin sculpted goliath hooks that pushed their blues sound into the cosmos, and Black Sabbath, armed with a dark and towering din, struck fear into the hearts of parents around the world. Whether employing turbocharged takes on classic forms (AC/DC), building arena-crumbling walls of sound (The Who), or embarking on interstellar prog missions (Rush), the riff rose to glorious heights in the hands of these artists.

Metal's earliest titans forged their core sounds in the ‘70s. Sabbath's 1970 landmark “Paranoid” innovated the marriage of crushing power chords and doom-laden nihilism. The year after, Zeppelin's “Black Dog” introduced the art of shrieking vocals and humongous, headbanging grooves. By the decade's end Motörhead hit the scene with a harsh, punk-fuelled blitz that led the genre into the '80s.

Obús’ heavy riffs and onstage theatricality has an observable lineage in the canons of metal and rock. Their fierce guitars are apparent in Judas Priest’s rollicking “Living After Midnight” and Deep Purple’s year-zero headbanging anthem “Smoke On The Water”. Motörhead’s “Overkill” anticipates Obús at their most relentless, with snarling drums and singer Lemmy’s jaded scream.
