Bring Me the Horizon’s mix of metal, electronic music, and pop is proof that hard rock still has plenty of room to grow. Even within the band’s own discography, you can hear walls continuously breaking down: Nobody in 2006, for example, probably would’ve guessed that the Sheffield, UK, band would end up absorbing trap rhythms or collaborating with straight-up pop singers like Halsey, but so blow the winds of time. In a way, the band is a callback to the developments of '70s prog-rock: Tirelessly experimental, deadly serious, but driven by an exhilarating sense of creativity. From their metalcore beginnings to their stadium-sized crossover, here’s the screaming, thumping best of Bring Me the Horizon.

Blackbear has followed in the path of other ‘10s alt-R&B stars like The Weeknd by cutting sharp pop melodies full of decadent orchestration and wicked narratives. The catchy piano chords and echoing finger snaps of “I Miss the Old U” act as a counterpoint to his slide into a druggy abyss, while “Sniffing Vicodin in Paris” finds him reminiscing about getting high with an ex as he mocks the brattish vapidness of L.A.'s rich kids. On the murky blips and bleeps of “Girls Like U,” his pristine vocals emerge from the smoke and shadows as he realizes he's in too deep with a dangerous girl who's both “a blessing and a curse.”

In the wake of Lorde and Lana Del Rey, Halsey has helped to shift outcasts and rebels towards pop’s center with uncompromising lyrics about experiencing youth and then adulthood as an outsider. After a cameo on The Chainsmokers’ 2016 breakup chronicle “Closer” turned them into pop royalty, the following year saw them relitigate past romance failures on 2017’s “Bad at Love” and pine for an absent lover on “Now or Never.” Halsey committed even further to memoir-level self-reflection on open-hearted smashes like 2020’s “You should be sad” before drawing on the transformative journey of pregnancy and motherhood for 2021’s <i>If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power</i> under the cinematic influence of producers Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. Three years later, the tellingly titled <i>The Great Impersonator</i> delved into their personal struggles with authenticity on tracks like the strikingly stripped-down “The End.” In the process, they have created a new standard of conversation for fans who see themselves in the pop star’s mold-defying image.

With a delivery that mixed singing and rapping, Lil Peep wove samples of early-2000s bands like Brand New and Modest Mouse into trap beats and eerily singsong raps about drugs, depression, and broken relationships. Born Gustav Åhr, he had a tragically brief career, releasing his first mixtape in late 2015 and dying of an overdose just two years later. Yet, he made an indelible mark—and inspired countless imitators—with his angst-ridden lyrics and melancholy guitar chords, channeling Chief Keef fronting an emo band on “beamer boy” and capturing the rawness of fresh heartbreak on “Awful Things” with fellow GothBoiClique member (and frequent collaborator) Lil Tracy. The XXXTENTACION teamup “Falling Down” became a posthumous release for both artists in 2018, and equally poignant is the same year’s fatalistic yet somewhat hopeful “Life Is Beautiful.” Meanwhile, producer Clams Casino turned “4 Gold Chains” into a surreal, slo-mo journey through the rapper’s hangdog emo rap. The early track “Star Shopping” went multiplatinum upon its 2019 rerelease and reminded fans just how painfully intimate Lil Peep’s delivery had always been.
