MC Jin may have been born and raised in the US, but he’s never forgotten his Chinese roots. “As a child, I think pretty much every Lunar New Year was an extra-special time for me,” he tells Apple Music. “I grew up in Miami, which at the time didn’t really have that large of a Chinese community. So when it was around the corner, you could definitely sense the excitement in the air.” “It's about the food,” he says of his fond holiday memories and traditions. “It's about looking forward to both receiving and giving. Most of all, it’s about family and celebrating another year of good health and prosperity. And we make sure the house is cleaned thoroughly to start the festivities, to get rid of all the previous negative vibes from the past year.” To welcome the new year, MC Jin has created a playlist featuring hip-hop, R&B, rock, and pop hits that focus on the holiday’s main themes of fun, family, and hopefulness. “One of my favorite phrases to wish everyone during Lunar New Year, or just in general, is ‘Shen ti jian kang,’” says Jin, “which literally means to have a healthy body. All the food, festivities, and traditions aside, I think that Lunar New Year is really about celebrating the most important things in our lives, which ultimately would be the health and well-being of one’s self and loved ones.”

As James Brown told both his audiences and his impeccably well-drilled band members, it’s all about “the one.” That’s what the Godfather of Soul called the downbeat, the rhythmic building block whose importance became paramount as black musicians of the ‘50s and ‘60s pared down the sounds of soul, jazz, and R&B to the barest fundamentals of rhythm and groove. Along with Brown, the supremely funky likes of Sly & the Family Stone, The Meters, and George Clinton’s sprawling Parliament-Funkadelic family spent the ‘70s making people move with music whose momentum, exuberance, and sheer relentlessness were irresistible to anything with a pulse. In the process, they created a versatile vocabulary that D’Angelo, Galactic, and other latter-day funkateers are all too happy to expand and adapt to their own rubbery and rhythmic purposes.

As the calendar flipped to Y2K, teen pop ruled music’s roost, with megastars like Britney Spears and *NSYNC dominating the charts. But over the course of the 2000s, a varied pop landscape would emerge, with streetwise hip-hop, emotionally fraught rock, swooning R&B, hook-studded emo, and big-tent pop all getting their moments in the sun—and even coming together in DJ-crafted mash-ups and high-profile collaborations. Pop in the 21st century’s first decade reflected the emergent digital-music era, with the “on shuffle” ideal resulting in radio playlists where Kanye rubbed elbows with The Killers and Kelly Clarkson, or where a hard-hitting Eminem track was bracketed by offerings from Beyoncé and Mariah Carey. That mix of genres and outsize personalities made for an exciting decade that put the party back in pop.
