An irresistible synth melody. A snare drum loaded with reverb. A guitar line that’s tight and powerful. If the song you’re listening to has at least one of these things, it may be from the 1980s, the decade when disco waned and hip-hop emerged, Madonna blew up in the U.S., the hitmaking team of Stock Aitken Waterman pumped out smash singles for Rick Astley and Dead or Alive, and Michael Jackson broke sales and chart records around the world. Of course, thanks to MTV, this was also a decade when the biggest stars weren't just heard but also seen, as the music video gave artists a new medium to explore. Peter Gabriel mastered the form with psychedelic mini-masterpieces to complement his vibrant art-pop, while Prince, in the midst of reinventing rock ’n’ roll, turned out two feature-length film masterpieces with classic soundtracks to match.

Dance music exploded in the 2000s, building on the combined energies of ’90s rave, Eurodance, chart rap, and club pop. The result was a shape-shifting collection of sounds and styles that mapped a thrillingly unpredictable path from the underground to the mainstream and back again. Daft Punk led the pack, twisting vintage house and disco into the kind of giddily anthemic hits that could unite veteran clubbers with casual pop fans. David Guetta, Calvin Harris, and the Swedish House Mafia found crossover success by forging the upbeat sounds of electro-house, trance, and progressive into festival-ready, radio-friendly fusions, thus setting the stage for the EDM boom of the 2010s. And while Britney Spears and Rihanna were slipping Top 10 hits past the nightclub’s velvet rope, old-school heads like LCD Soundsystem, Justice, and Chromeo were drawing on synth-pop and disco, turning retro inspirations into a new strain of dance-floor populism.

Jeff Buckley's voice was a truly special gift. How else could a musician with just one studio album to his name yield no fewer than 10 posthumous releases of compilations and live recordings? 1994's Grace was a songwriting masterclass, showcasing Buckley's powerhouse vocals and lyrical romanticism. Unfortunately, while the record is widely acclaimed, Buckley's talent was taken far too soon when he drowned in 1997 at age 30—while working on what would have been his sophomore LP, My Sweetheart the Drunk.

After a decade of hair bands singing about wild times and fast living, hard rock in the ’90s turned darker, heavier and meaner. This can be credited to the commercial success of a wave of bands emerging from outside the mainstream. Metallica’s bulldozing arena anthems reflect their thrash-metal roots, Nirvana’s grunge revolution delivered the angst of underground rock to MTV, Rage Against the Machine’s politically charged attacks reflected their days in the hardcore scene and Tool’s harsh nihilism grew out of the fringes of alt-metal. Outside of Guns N’ Roses, who managed to score some awfully big hits early in the decade, few veteran pop-metal acts survived these seismic shifts. It wouldn’t be until the tail end of the ’90s that a brash young MC from Detroit calling himself Kid Rock would help revive high-volume party music with his infectious mix of swaggering rock riffs and megaton hip-hop beats.

LINKIN PARK's mixed bag of a sound was a revelation when it hit the airwaves in the early '00s. Drawing as much from Pantera as it did JAY Z, as much from The Roots as Pink Floyd, the group's sonic stew made it one of the most unique and successful rock acts of all time.

The Chili Peppers' uniquely SoCal mashup of punk-funk and alt-metal is one of the cornerstones of modern rock. While nu-metal overlords Korn and Limp Bizkit studied RHCP's thrashing syncopation, nearly every ska-pop act this side of No Doubt soaked up their knack for sun-splashed melodies and high-energy party tunes that sound killer while cruising up to Malibu.

In the deepest reaches of Héroes del Silencio's musical labyrinth you will find the melancholic album cuts, such as “No Más Lágrimas,” that expose the more melodic side of their brooding hard rock. And there are also those classic-rock-influenced power ballads like “En Brazos de la Fiebre” and post-punk ballads like “Hace Tiempo” that reveal the diverse roots feeding their enigmatic body of work.
