The Voice was Whitney Houston's nickname, a faculty recast as a superlative because the pop-R&B powerhouse was in possession of her generation's most quintessential one. With a three-octave span inherited from her gospel-performer mother, she had a voice that rang with a bell's clarity and a pearl's elegance. But it was also forceful. Houston didn't wield it so much as pilot it—on “Saving All My Love For You” like a hot-air balloon; on “I Will Always Love You” like a 747.

Fred Gibson, aka Fred again.., is one of the best-connected house DJs in the game. Ambient royalty Brian Eno took him under his wing as a teenager, and the London producer has since worked with some of the biggest names around. Gibson’s songs consistently offer diary-like snapshots of a specific time and place, with his <i>Actual Life</i> album series even listing the exact date ranges of creation in their titles. On 2021’s pulsing 2-step track “Marea (We’ve Lost Dancing)”, The Blessed Madonna mourns for the fun halted by COVID-19, while 2022’s “Delilah (pull me out of this)” samples Delilah Montagu for similarly poignant results. “I’ve become really obsessed with…taking very fleeting moments and exposing as much beauty as is in them,” he told Apple Music’s Zane Lowe in 2022. He has very much continued to do that ever since, whether spotlighting Nigerian singer Obongjayar on 2023’s delicate valentine “adore u” or swinging in the opposite direction with the in-your-face swagger of 2025’s “Victory Lap”, a track that has earned multiple joyful permutations. Both a chameleonic creator and a consummate collaborator, Gibson zeroes in on little epiphanies that underscore the community-building inherent to dance music.
