“Woke up to n****s sounding like me,” Playboi Carti boasts on “Wokeuplikethis*,” his collaboration with Lil Uzi Vert. Carti's influence on late 2010s rap is undeniable, but duplicating his energy and sound is virtually impossible. Born and raised in Atlanta, he moved to New York City to pursue music and began to roll with the A$AP Mob. He manipulates his voice through stabbing staccatos, a baby-like giggle, and effective harmonies, while using ad-libs as percussion or as entire choruses. Carti does whatever he pleases, and it works equally well on his bouncy hit “Magnolia,” highlights from his modern classic LP <I>Die Lit</I>, and collaborations.

Avril Lavigne came crashing into the charts in 2002 with a sound that stuck up a black nail-varnished middle finger at the hyper-polished world of classmates Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. From the chugging, three-chord pop-punk of “Sk8er Boi” and “My Happy Ending” to the country-hued, catchy melody of “Complicated” and the twinkling balladry of “I'm With You,” the Canadian singer proved herself a crossover star, garnering legions of both mainstream and fringe fans with her Cali punk-indebted sound. In later years, she grew into a more mature pop sound with less of a rock edge, as heard on the touching ballad "Head Above Water," which addresses her battle with Lyme disease.
