Standing on the shoulders of acts like En Vogue and SWV, Destiny's Child set a new standard for girl groups—and pop groups in general. Distinguished by Beyoncé's megawatt talents and a sound that merged pop sheen with hip-hop grit, the trio became synonymous with take-no-sass radio staples like the iconic “Survivor” and the unstoppable “Say My Name”. “Independent Women”, an anthem to autonomy disguised as a jerking club track, somehow turned the word “question” into a hook. It was all in a day's work for a group that made self-empowerment into a cottage industry.

In the hands of innovative contemporary artists, electronics have breathed new life into the tropical sounds of cumbia, bridging the gap between the folk of yesteryear and forward-thinking experimentalism. The fusion of electronic music and cumbia originated in the ‘90s—known then as "techno cumbia"—thanks to the mission statement put forth by Tejano legend Selena. The hybrid eventually known as nu cumbia reached an apex in the ‘00s courtesy of Buenos Aires’ pioneering label ZZK Records. In Mexico, Celso Piña earned a reputation as the rebel of the accordion by daring to step outside the limits of traditionalism, inviting an eccentric cohort of hip-hop and electronic beatmakers into the mix. Shortly after, feisty Colombian duo Bomba Estéreo introduced the world to their cumbia punk brilliance and kicked off an electro-cumbia craze. Peruvian producers Dengue Dengue Dengue followed suit, as did a colourful cast of Argentinean electro-folklorists that includes Chancha Via Circuito, La Yegros and El Remolón.

Garage music—named after the Paradise Garage, where resident DJ Larry Levan held court—was born in New York and New Jersey in the early '80s as disco morphed into house music. More spacious and synthetic than much disco, yet more soulfully musical than later house, it's a best-of-both-worlds sound. Its mirror-ball influences shine through in the walking bass and flashing hi-hats of Loose Joints' "Is It All Over My Face?"; its deeper, darker club energies shine through in pumping cuts from Blaze, Mood II Swing and Masters at Work, who flipped jazz keys and gospel vocals into the template for deep house.
