Las Vegas post-hardcore heroes Escape the Fate have an element of danger about them; their dark songs stood out even in the fertile ‘00s emo scene. “My Apocalypse” takes a pessimistic view of the future over traditionally screamo pig squeals and rhythmic pick slides. A change in vocalist brought 2010's transition into hard rock (“Issues”); the band started to abandon their emo roots and solidify their heavy bona fides with songs like “You're Insane”, where melodic and throat-bleeding vocals trade the spotlight over driving bass.

Pierce the Veil's wild, emo-influenced post-hardcore combines exhilarating melodies with blasts of technically striking guitar riffage. Steered by the dynamic one-two punch of brothers Vic (vocals/guitar) and Mike (drums) Fuentes, the San Diego group's sound is tough to pin down: they experiment with tunes that explore lightning-struck screamo, anthemic pop-punk and even prog-inspired metal. These stunners, culled from the band's diverse and forceful discography, provide a glimpse into all facets of their enduring relationship with challenging, heavy and hard rock.

Southern California's Black Veil Brides are at the vanguard of the evolution of post-hardcore and metallic rock. They stayed true to screamo on their 2010 debut album, We Stitch These Wounds, putting intricate guitar solos near the genre's signature breakdowns. Andy Biersack soon showed that throat-bleeding force was just an accessory of his muscular baritone, bringing hard rock melody in step with the band's glam theatrics (“Set the World on Fire”). They keep exploring both territories—sometimes in the same song, as in the punishing percussion and ascending chorus of the anthemic “Revelation”.

Pop-punk never went in for flashy theatrics—until these Vegas showmen burst onto the scene in 2005. Panic! unleash dramatic impulses that land somewhere between a punk rock club and a vaudeville show. The band fold accordions, organs, synths, dance beats and Brendon Urie's quivering howls into a spiky mix of guitar pop, sealing it all with song titles that could serve as snappy haikus. Aside from Urie's commanding presence, the lineup has been in a constant state of flux, which has only spurred forays into Sgt. Pepper-esque pop, electro-rock and even a little hip-hop.
