Often pegged as a teen idol, Rick Nelson did much to popularize rock 'n' roll and later to bring rock and country together. His family's '50s TV show, The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, often featured young Ricky with his band, which included future Elvis lead guitarist James Burton. In 1969 he formed one of the first country-rock bands, the Stone Canyon Band. A bad time at a Madison Square Garden oldies show led to 1972's Garden Party and its hit title song. His career was cut short in 1985 when his private plane crashed, en route to a New Year's Eve show in Dallas.

First collaborating as part of the touring band for The Beach Boys, husband and wife Daryl Dragon and Toni Tennille eventually decided to break off as a recording duo of their own. As Captain & Tennille, they become one of the most successful soft rock acts of their time. With her shiny bob and his fisherman's hat, the pair were cultural icons from '75-'79, hosting their own TV variety show, charting six Top Five singles, and winning '75's Record of the Year GRAMMY®. Sporadically active after '80, Tennille filed for divorce from the Captain after 39 years of marriage in 2014.
