With guitar-driven anthems like “Monsoon Rock” and “Freaks To The Front”, Amyl and The Sniffers could have been spawned in any regional pub-rock scene across Australia. Formed in 2016 by a core of three Melburnian housemates, the band flex an energetic combination of joy, rage and cheek across 2019’s self-titled debut album, which brought them to international attention, and even more so on 2021’s <I>Comfort To Me</I>. Led by hard-charging frontwoman Amy Taylor, these songs about dealing with bouncers (“Security”), having no money (“Gacked On Anger”) and slagging off exes’ new girlfriends (“Some Mutts (Can’t Be Muzzled)”) make for danceable assault and battery—with a sense of fun.

Although Byron Bay's Parkway Drive are generally classified as metalcore, the band also take cues from deathcore's down-tuned growls and venomous metal riffs. The group's mid-'00s work honed in on heaviness—witness the sledgehammering breakdown of the '80s thrash throwback "Boneyards", or the underworld-banshee snarls driving the bruising "Romance Is Dead". On later studio albums, Parkway Drive have paired pulverising blast beats and gouging grooves with more sophisticated flourishes, including gang vocals ("Vice Grip"), nu-metal jawing ("Crushed") and gravelly sludge rock ("Dark Days").
