ALT CTRL - ALT CTRL is home to the latest and greatest in alternative music. Here, it’s as much an attitude as a sound—music that keeps things a little left of center and rough around the edges. This week, Hayley Williams returns with “Glum,” one of the 17 surprise tracks she just self-released. The Paramore vocalist and singer-songwriter is known for her kinetic performances and sunny, sky-high vocal range, yet “Glum” strikes a more somber chord. An acoustic guitar and a steady beat take the slow and steady route through a dreary forecast as Williams ruminates on loneliness and melancholy before belting out the chorus (“Do you ever feel so alone/That you could implode and no one would know?”). Williams may be “Glum” on this track, but we’re certainly not as she turns the page on a new chapter. Check back often, as our editors update this playlist regularly—and if you hear something you like, add it to your library.

New in Alternative - Here’s a hub for the newest in alternative music. Sure, the term casts a pretty wide net, but you know the spirit when you hear it. We update this playlist with fresh tracks every week, so if you hear something you like, add it to your library.

INDIY - One of the great shifts of the streaming era–aside from getting new sounds into your headphones almost as soon as they're made—is the dissolution of borders between indie and R&B. Mellow but adventurous, the tracks here (many of them self-produced and self-released) have as much to do with the expressivity of soul as the left-field subversions of “alternative”—music that invites you in but still keeps things a little weird and abstract. We update this playlist with new songs every day. If you like something, add it to your library.

All Indie - Depending on where you're from or what year you were born, the word “indie” can mean many different things. But what's remained constant—from the wild, punk-indebted rock of the ‘80s to the post-genre freedom of today—is that indie, if it can be defined at all, is about an unwillingness to conform or be categorized. On the playlist formerly titled Untitled, these are the songs and sounds that share that spirit, whether it's psychedelic bedroom pop or interstellar R&B. Songs and sounds of the moment, if not the next.

Antidote - Antidote is home to the best new alternative music in the UK and beyond—a celebration of independence, innovation, and artists who don’t just push boundaries but reduce them to rubble. This week, Biffy Clyro top the playlist with “Hunting Season,” a fresh slice of rock from the Scottish stalwarts. “I guess we’re all being hunted, we’re all very guilty these days of judging things with minimal information, so that’s kind of the sentiment—it’s always ‘Hunting Season’ at the moment,” Biffy’s Simon Neil tells Apple Music. “Musically, it was a riff I came up with in my hall at home. I went straight in with the boys and we played it, and Ben [Johnston, drummer] was really buzzing on it right away, it started to blossom and it’s now in its final form.”

And, as Neil explains, the track has a powerful message: “Don’t feel afraid, don’t not do things because you think someone is going to judge you, but don’t be that person always judging either. Life’s tough enough as it is and we need to cut each other, and ourselves, a little slack.”

“Hunting Season” is a taste of their new album Futique, due out on September 26, which finds the band in a reflective and content period. “It’s probably the most sonically cohesive record we’ve ever made,” says Neil. “All the songs came from one small period of time, and when we got in the same room together everything bloomed at the same time. It’s got every kind of aspect of what we do as band. We played some anniversary shows last year, which was the first time we’ve reflected on the early records, and we took little flavorings from those here and there for this record. But it’s a whole new meal, with a slightly different palette!” Also on this week’s playlist are new tracks from IDLES, Fat Dog, and Hayley Williams. Like all the artists featured, Antidote is always evolving—so keep checking back, and if you hear something you like, add it to your library.
