Electronic dance music has frequently turned to the past for inspiration, and electro-swing—a largely European club phenomenon—reaches back to the swing era of the '30s for its unique flavor. Following the lead of hip-hop producers who mined vintage jazz records for samples, electro-swing progenitors like Austria’s Parov Stelar—who coined the genre name in 2005—and French trip-hop crew Chinese Man were among the first to formalize an identifiable aesthetic. Frequently deploying a four-on-the floor rhythmic drive, the music’s producers deftly layer in terse samples of brassy American big bands, buoyant Western swing tracks, or the insouciant French jazz Manouche sound pioneered by guitarist Django Reinhardt, bringing a sense of nostalgic joy to their tracks. It may be initially surprising that an act as brilliantly bizarre as BABYMETAL—a young Tokyo trio whose coruscating shred-pop songs worship a deity named The Fox God—could become a global phenomenon. However, spend a while in the furiously fun universe of songs like “Karate,” and it makes perfect sense that Su-metal, Yuimetal, and Moametal fill stadiums worldwide. Combining speedy virtuoso riffery and pummeling double bass pedal drums with bubblegum hooks, their bombastic sound crosses a new frontier in metal, with fan favorite "Gimme Chocolate!!" a genuine sugar rush.
