When it comes to optimism, When Chai Met Toast have it in spades. The indie-folk band from Kochi are all about upbeat messages, jangling strings and summery vibes. There’s togetherness and a confidence in their music that belies their years, with songs of love and hope that feature lyrics in Hindi, English, Malayalam and Tamil, wrapped up in vibrant melodies and bouncy rhythms. Whether it’s in romantic bluegrass-inspired tunes like 2017’s “Firefly” or the dance-tinged rock of 2020’s “Maybe I Can Fly”, this is heart-warming independent Indian music at its best.

Legend has it Simon Cowell only took 10 minutes to decide to bring then-teenaged contestants Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson and Liam Payne together to form a boy band on The X Factor in July 2010. And yet, no one could’ve predicted what would follow.
