Thanks to Ghost, satanic metal has never sounded so gloriously melodic. Blending touches of doom, psychedelia, and hard rock like watercolours, the cloaked Swedes paint odes to sacrilege featuring graceful harmonies and creeping fretwork. Their debut single, 2009's “Elizabeth,” set the stage with funereal axes and organs encased in shimmering onyx. Adding acoustic guitars to the mix, “Cirice” sounds like a thunderous anthem to an '80s horror flick. Even on the chugging “From the Pinnacle to the Pit” from 2015's Meliora, Ghost weave melodies as gorgeous as they are sinister.

Since the early ‘90s, these berserk Swedish Viking metalheads have been harnessing rage as explosive as their Middle-earth volcano namesake. The pulverising pagans, led by Johan Hegg and his soul-crushing growl, combine elements of black and death metal on tracks like the dark, driving battle cry “The Pursuit of Vikings” and the relentless “Asator”. Their rapid-fire drums and onslaughts of wild, blistering guitar on songs like “War of the Gods” ensure these metal warriors a seat in Valhalla.

With blistering shows and tree-shredder vocals, this UK trio personified punk attitude, even before punk broke in England. After cutting his teeth in hard prog-rockers Hawkwind, Lemmy Kilmister launched Motörhead in 1975, and was its only constant member until his death in 2015. They recorded a head-spinning array of killer albums, all showcasing a ferocious brand of sucker-punch rock, while pioneering genres like speed metal and thrash along the way. Everyone from Guns N' Roses to Slayer have sung Motörhead's praises, but Dave Grohl put it best: "Lemmy's the king of rock 'n' roll".
