Since their country has long been a cultural crossroads between Europe and the Middle East, Turkey's musicians were bound to put their own spin on the new sounds of the ‘60s and ‘70s. Sure enough, the results were enthralling when rock, soul and psychedelia got mixed up with Turkish traditions and such instruments as the lute-like saz. Moǧollar's meaty jams, Selda Baǧcan's stirring protest songs and Erkin Koray's wild psych all rank with the era's most vital mergers of East and West. And thanks to later mavericks like hard rocker Ogün Sanlısoy and the unpredictable Replikas, Anatolian rock continues to blast off in new directions.
