Kino is one of the most revered bands that emerged from St Petersburg (then Leningrad), a true hotbed of rock activity in the ‘80s. With broody guitars and poetic verses sung in a striking baritone by lead singer-songwriter Viktor Tsoi, the band explored the most accessible corners of post-punk, new wave and folk—striking a chord with a hopeful glasnost-era generation. Their 1988 LP Gruppa Krovi brought them widespread success, while Tsoi’s tragic death two years later gave rise to a Kinomania phenomenon that still holds strong today.

Zemfira's commanding onstage presence translates directly to her love songs, where she most clearly demonstrates her gentle yet firm approach to songwriting. Whether accompanied by a buoyant bounce or rumbling pulse, her vocals ring through the mix with poignancy and meaning, without resorting to overt sentimentality.

If their impassioned punk sound is anything to go by, Moscow-based power trio Pasosh are brimming with the spirit of the 1990s American Midwest. And just like the finest bands that historic scene produced, Pasosh’s tunes are marked by an energising push/pull between subdued and roaringly loud—and a keen sense of melody. Kirill Gorodny’s guitars slash and jangle in broad, bold strokes. Grisha Drach’s drumming rolls between snappy snares, emphatic thumps and subtle rhythms. It’s all fuel for bassist/vocalist Petar Martich’s deeply resonant, full-throated croon.
