Informed by blues, country, bluegrass, and a wide variety of roots music, the songs of Columbus folk unit Caamp import a contemporary pop immediacy into the inviting world of American traditional music. The group built a following in the late 2010s through musical narratives revolving around lonely travel (“By and By”), burning love (“Officer of Love”), nostalgia (“Ohio”), and hard-won lessons, imparted by lead singer Taylor Meier in a smoky baritone over intricate banjo and latticed acoustic guitars. With tracks like “Apple Tree Blues” from their 2022 release <I>Lavender Days</I>, the group built out their sound into full-bodied folk rock that leads with hooks and delivers communal catharsis.
