Rap Life is home to hip-hop's heavy hitters and its vanguard—the songs that speak to the moment and define the culture today. This week, that means the long-anticipated Clipse and Kendrick Lamar collaboration “Chains & Whips”. Fans of haute couture clothing were some of the first to hear the track back when it was previewed in June 2023 at a Louis Vuitton runway show. And the man who played it? That would be none other than Louis Vuitton Men’s Creative Director Pharrell Williams, who is not coincidentally the track’s producer. If you’re a fan of hip-hop spats, this one is especially notable as a linkup between Pusha T and Kendrick Lamar, MCs who’ve made no secret of their love of competition. This is hardly a diss song, though. It is, most plainly, a song full of extremely tough bars from MCs who care deeply about that facet of hip-hop.
