2010s Love Song Essentials - A modern love song can be communicated through any musical means. Sentimental boy band ballads, frenzied banjo whirlwinds, ice-cool rap, glitchy R&B, twinkly piano heart-stoppers; it all cuts us right to the core.

Shawn Mendes Essentials - Canadian troubadour Shawn Mendes’ teen-idol appeal and soulful voice helped him become a social media star in the mid-2010s. His 2014 debut single, “Life of the Party,” is a sweeping piano ballad that shows off his passionate vocals, and the hits that followed—including the following year’s multiplatinum smash “Stitches”—combined thoughtful lyrics with insistent rhythms. As he began to co-write more of his songs, Mendes welcomed such adult themes as anxiety and sexuality without shedding the brightness or earnestness that made him appealing to begin with. Observe 2018’s stripped-down “Lost in Japan,” which foregrounds its bouncing-ball bassline as Mendes shifts into international-lover mode. Then 2020’s R&B-shaded “Monster” put him toe to toe with Justin Bieber, who has experienced a similar career trajectory, before 2021’s “It’ll Be Okay” saw Mendes grow even more self-reflective—a tendency that only grew more pronounced on 2024’s Shawn. As he told Apple Music that year, a spiritual experience on a mountain in Kauai gave him a newfound sense of security, both personally and artistically: “A lot changed after that, because when you’re not chasing something, you let go. And then it almost feels like things are starting to appear.”

Pop Au Lait - Music can play a lot of different roles: a fresh perspective, an emotional bridge, a cathartic release, or just good, simple company as you go about your business. With that in mind, here’s a set of breezy, upbeat acoustic pop tunes—some new, some old—for keeping your mood light and your day moving. We regularly update this playlist; if you hear something you like, add it to your library.

Jackson Wang’s New Year Playlist - 2021 was as busy as ever for Jackson Wang. Between his solo music, newly formed group PANTHEPACK, and label Team Wang, it’s no surprise he needs time to unwind over the holiday period—and he’s made a playlist perfectly suited to the occasion. “These are songs I’ve personally enjoyed listening to recently,” the K-pop and C-pop crossover star tells Apple Music. “Slower, comfier songs that help me to relax, relieve pressure, and put my mind at ease.”

As one of China’s big international musical exports, he knows how to globalize his sound—but he’s mindful of not casting himself into a certain mold. “To me, there’s no such thing as ‘pop,’ and I don’t want to limit myself to some area or another,” he says. “I just hope to do whatever I do well.” And from music to fashion, he’s got high hopes for 2022—not only for himself, but the artists he supports. “I feel like we’ve put out a lot of things by Chinese artists, and I hope that continues next year, so we can give more to the world.”

Serrini: Hearts Aflutter - When it comes to Lunar New Year, love is all Serrini needs. “Every year, I want to be a better version of myself,” the Hong Kong-based singer-songwriter tells Apple Music. “Evolution is sometimes spurred by negativity. But I hope that my evolution will come from the love I have for myself—to be able to find inner peace and truly love who I am.” The artist rings in the Year of the Rabbit, and the changing of the season, with a playlist of tracks that suggest the awakening of love in the spring. “My favorite song, apart from my own track, ‘樹仔’ [‘Tree Baby’], is Sunhe’s ‘Horoyoi,’” she says. “I think it’s really cute to make the direct statement, ‘I’m not tipsy from the three per cent wine/I just like you a lot!’ And paired with that chill, catchy music, it makes me want to let go and dance in the street.” Serrini also taps into the love she feels while home during the holidays. “I really like how festive the Lunar New Year is. I love to see my family happily playing mahjong. I picked the song ‘Until I Found You’ by Stephen Sanchez to express my love for my family,” she says. “I hope this can be a love-filled time where relatives become better friends and friends become family.”
