Formed in the late '50s by brothers Barry, Robin, and Maurice Gibb, the Bee Gees became one of the most enduring and influential musical acts in history. Amassing critical and commercial success—they've sold over 220 million albums worldwide—they were instrumental in the popularization of disco in the '70s. Everyone from Michael Jackson and Paul McCartney to Ringo Starr and Beyoncé count them as influences. Their soundtrack to Saturday Night Fever remains one of the best selling albums of all time, and is largely responsible for prolonging the disco craze.

Karen Carpenter was blessed with one of the most exquisitely warm and inviting voices in pop history, but with a melancholy edge even on her sunniest songs. Her older brother Richard was a gifted arranger with a knack for finding the perfect song. The Southern California duo's enormous success began with classic AM radio soft-pop hits like "(They Long to Be) Close to You" and "We've Only Just Begun." A long string of fine records followed, until the siblings' personal problems began to eclipse their music. Karen's anorexia-related death in early 1983 ended one of the great pop duos.

One of ‘70s pop's most successful songwriters, Leo Sayer has a showman's sense of commitment that allowed him to explore falsetto funk (“You Make Me Feel Like Dancing”) and stormy disco rock (“Thunder In My Heart”) with total authority. And the melodic turmoil of his ballads comes from a place of deep yearning, from the self-searching “Giving It All Away” to the utterly bereft “I Can't Stop Loving You (Though I Try).” Even when he's at his most reassuring—“When I Need You”—there's a tearful core of solemnity that suggests he's singing from bitter experience.

With her stirring voice and string of folky soft-rock hits, Carly Simon became a defining American singer/songwriter in the '70s. She scored a romantic hit with the title song from second record, '72's Anticipation, which she followed up with her sassy breakthrough album, No Secrets. After the huge success of her theme from the '77 James Bond film The Spy Who Loved Me, Simon became an in-demand Hollywood songwriter, earning both a GRAMMY® and an Oscar for her tune on the '88 film Working Girl. She's now a pop icon, having inspired everyone from Sheryl Crow to Taylor Swift.

First collaborating as part of the touring band for The Beach Boys, husband and wife Daryl Dragon and Toni Tennille eventually decided to break off as a recording duo of their own. As Captain & Tennille, they become one of the most successful soft rock acts of their time. With her shiny bob and his fisherman's hat, the pair were cultural icons from '75-'79, hosting their own TV variety show, charting six Top Five singles, and winning '75's Record of the Year GRAMMY®. Sporadically active after '80, Tennille filed for divorce from the Captain after 39 years of marriage in 2014.
