Charismatic G. V. Prakash Kumar, the nephew of Academy Award-winning composer A. R. Rahman, made an impact with his critically acclaimed Tamil debut soundtrack, Veyil. Despite super hit songs such as "Akkam Pakkam" to his credit, G. V. Prakash has continued to thrive at every level of the music production process—including scoring the background music to the Hindi classic Gangs of Wasseypur Parts I and II. The ’10s saw a series of viral Tamil hits win legions of fans across India. Chennai’s greatest asset, filmi powerhouse A. R. Rahman, reached new romantic highs with the swooning, ’90s-laced soundtrack to Kaatru Veliyidai (2017), earning him a National Film Award for Best Music Direction. But the decade was also marked by young film composer Anirudh Ravichander’s meteoric rise.
