The FreeYourMusic MCP server lets an AI assistant work with your music services. You ask in a chat, for example "add these five songs to my road trip playlist", and the assistant uses FreeYourMusic tools to do it. It works through the FreeYourMusic desktop app, which must be open.

What you need

  • The FreeYourMusic desktop app on macOS, Windows or Linux, open and with your music services connected. Download it here.
  • An MCP host: Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor or Cline.
  • Node.js, to run the installer with npx.

Install it

Install the FreeYourMusic MCP server

  1. Open the FreeYourMusic desktop app.
  2. In a terminal, run the command for your host. Claude Desktop: npx -y @freeyourmusic/mcp install --host=claude-desktop. Claude Code: --host=claude-code. Cursor: --host=cursor. Cline: --host=cline.
  3. Restart the host. The tools appear under the freeyourmusic server.
  4. Ask the assistant to check your FreeYourMusic status. It should list your connected services.

Each host has its own install page with the exact config file and restart step: Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Cursor, Cline. For another host, run npx -y @freeyourmusic/mcp install --host=print and paste the JSON it prints into the host config.

Restart tips per host

  • Claude Desktop: quit it fully (cmd+Q on macOS) and open it again.
  • Claude Code: reload the project. The tools register by themselves.
  • Cursor: restart Cursor and check that the MCP server indicator turns green.
  • Cline: restart VS Code, or run "MCP Servers: Reload" from the command palette.

What can the assistant do?

ToolsWhat they doPlan
ReadStatus, services, accounts, sign-in, playlists, playlist songs, your library and recent historyFree
SearchSearch songs, albums and artistsFree: 100 searches a day. Premium: unlimited
WriteCreate, rename and delete playlists; add, remove and reorder songs; like and unlike; follow and unfollow artistsPremium

The plans are the same as for the CLI. If you connected two or more accounts of one service, tell the assistant which account to use. See the pricing page for Premium.

Privacy

  • The MCP server talks to the FreeYourMusic desktop app through a local bridge on 127.0.0.1. That traffic does not leave your computer.
  • The key for the bridge changes every time the desktop app starts.
  • The MCP server adds no tracking. Published versions report unexpected errors to our crash-reporting tool, without your tool arguments or credentials. Set FYM_DISABLE_TELEMETRY=1 to turn that off.
  • Tool results go to your AI app. How that app processes them depends on its settings and its model provider.

Frequently asked questions

The tools do not show up in my host. What do I do?

Restart the host fully after the install. Check that the FreeYourMusic desktop app is open. If the tools still do not show, run the install command again, or use --host=print and add the JSON to the host config by hand.

Does the MCP server work on my phone?

No. It needs the FreeYourMusic desktop app on macOS, Windows or Linux, and an MCP host on the same computer.

A tool answers UNSUPPORTED_OPERATION. Why?

That tool is not available for your account yet. The status, services and accounts tools always work.

Does my AI assistant see my music service passwords?

No. The desktop app keeps your sign-ins. The assistant only gets the results of the tools it calls.
