It depends on how many songs you move and on the music services at both ends. FreeYourMusic searches the destination for every song and adds each match, and every music service limits how fast apps may do that. So a large library takes longer than a few playlists.
What decides the speed?
- The number of songs. Every song needs its own search on the destination.
- The music services. Each service sets its own limit on how many requests an app may send. When a service says the app is going too fast, FreeYourMusic waits and tries again, so a busy service slows the transfer down but does not fail it.
- Matching. When the destination cannot find a song by its ISRC code, FreeYourMusic searches by title, artist and album, which takes more requests. See how FreeYourMusic matches songs.
- The size of one transfer. One transfer takes up to 200 playlists. For more, start another transfer when the first one is done.
How can I help a transfer along?
- For the smoothest transfer, keep FreeYourMusic open until the transfer finishes. If you close it, your progress is kept, and the transfer goes on from where it was when you open the app again.
- On a computer: closing the window does not quit FreeYourMusic. It keeps running in the background, and you bring it back from its icon in the menu bar or system tray.
- On a phone or tablet: keep FreeYourMusic open on screen while a large transfer runs. Phones can pause apps in the background to save battery.
- Watch the transfer page. It shows every song with its status, so you can see the progress.
Frequently asked questions
My transfer seems to be stuck. What should I do?
Open the transfer and look for a message at the top, such as "Log in to" a service. Fix what it asks. If there is none, pause and resume the transfer. If it still does not move, see a transfer is stuck, failed or asks for action.
Can I pause a long transfer and go on later?
Yes. Pause it at any time and resume it later. Songs that already moved stay on the new service. See pause, resume and cancel.
Does auto-sync take this long every time?
Usually not. A sync compares the two playlists and searches only for the songs that changed since the last sync. Auto-sync is part of Premium, see auto-sync.
