A transfer that stops almost always tells you why: a banner on the transfer, or a message when you start it. Find the message below. Most fixes take one tap: sign in again, retry, or recreate the playlist.
Read the banner on the transfer
"Log in to ..." or "LOGGED OUT"
The sign-in to one of the services expired. Tap the banner and sign in again. The transfer continues after that. See I cannot sign in to a music service if the sign-in fails.
"Do something in ... first"
The music service needs an action from you before the transfer can go on, for example an active subscription or accepting its terms. Do what the banner asks on the service, then tap "RETRY".
"The account this transfer used is gone"
You disconnected the account that the transfer used. The transfer is kept as history. Connect the account again to run it.
"Do you want to try again?"
The app shows this when there was a problem while processing the transfer, or while creating the new playlist on the destination. Tap "RETRY". If it fails again, tap "REMOVE SYNC" and start a new transfer.
The transfer does not start
When you start a transfer, the app can answer "We could not start this transfer" with one of these reasons.
| Message | What to do |
|---|---|
| A transfer of this playlist to that account is already running. | Wait for that transfer to finish. You can follow it in your transfer list. |
| This account is not yours to transfer from. | Sign in again with the right account. |
| One of the playlists you picked is gone. | Refresh the list and pick your playlists again. |
| Pick two different accounts. | A transfer cannot start and end in the same account. Choose another destination. |
| Your sign-in has expired. | Tap "Sign in again". |
| We are still reading your source library (or destination library). | Wait a moment and try again. Big libraries take longer to read. |
| Connect your source account (or destination account) again to start this transfer. | Sign in to that service again. |
| You can move up to ... playlists at a time. | One transfer takes up to 200 playlists. Take some off the list and start the rest in a second transfer. |
| This service can no longer be used for transfers. | The service is paused in FreeYourMusic. Pick another service. |
Your library does not show in full
- "Refreshed a moment ago": the list is as fresh as it gets for the next minute. Wait a minute and refresh again.
- "We could not read your library again": the list shows what the app read last time. Try the refresh again later.
- "This is not your whole library": your library is so large that the app stopped reading it partway. Move what you see now, and move the rest in a second transfer.
A service asks us to slow down
Music services limit how fast an app can read and add songs. When a service asks FreeYourMusic to slow down, the app waits the time the service asks for and then goes on by itself. A big transfer can look paused during that time. You do not need to do anything.
When you change a match, the app can show "... is asking us to slow down. Try again in ... seconds." Wait that long and try again.
A playlist was deleted
"Should we recreate playlist?"
The playlist that FreeYourMusic created on the destination was removed. Tap "RECREATE PLAYLIST" to create it again, or "REMOVE SYNC" to stop syncing it.
"Missing source playlist"
The playlist you transferred from was removed on the source service. There is nothing left to sync. Tap "REMOVE SYNC". The copy on the destination stays.
"Empty source playlist"
The source playlist is suddenly empty. This happens when you cancel your subscription to the source service, or when the app cannot download the playlist. The app stops the sync so that the playlist on the destination is not emptied too. Tap "REMOVE SYNC" to keep the destination playlist as it is.
"Clearing playlist failed"
The app could not clear an existing playlist that you picked as the destination. Tap "Try Again", or "CREATE NEW PLAYLIST" to put the songs in a new playlist.
The destination cannot remove or reorder songs
Some services do not let other apps remove songs from a playlist, or change their order. The app then says "... does not allow to remove songs." or "... does not allow to synchronise order of songs."
When songs must go but the service does not allow it, you can "EXPORT" the list of those songs to an XLSX file and remove them yourself, or "RECREATE" the transfer without them.
Retry failed songs
Retry the songs that failed
- Open the transfer.
- Open the options menu of the transfer.
- Choose "Retry transfer failed tracks". The app tries the failed and unmatched songs again.
- If the playlist on the destination looks wrong, choose "Force recreate transfer" instead. This writes every song of the transfer to the destination again. The playlist itself stays the same.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my transfer look stuck?
The app may be reading a big library, or waiting because the music service asked it to slow down. It goes on by itself. If a banner shows on the transfer, follow what it says.
Will I lose my transfer if it fails?
No. The transfer and its songs stay in your list. You can retry, recreate the playlist or remove the sync.
What does "REMOVE SYNC" do?
It stops FreeYourMusic from syncing that playlist. The playlist on the destination service stays where it is.
