File backup: export to and import from Excel

On this page5 sections ▾

File Backup saves your playlists to Excel (XLSX) files and imports them again later, into any service you connect. A backup holds the song information, not the audio.

How do I back up playlists to an Excel file?

Back up playlists to an Excel file

  1. Open FreeYourMusic and pick the service you want to back up as the service you move from.
  2. Pick File Backup as the service you move to, and choose the playlists to back up.
  3. Start the transfer. When it is done, open the transfer and tap "Export as XLSX file".
  4. Choose where to save the file.

To save several backups at once, select them in your transfer list and choose "Export". FreeYourMusic saves one XLSX file per playlist, together in a ZIP file.

What is in the file?

One row per song, with four columns: id (the song id on the service you backed up), name, artist and album. Several artists or albums share one cell. A backup of albums has the columns id, name and artist.

How do I import an Excel file?

Import a playlist from an Excel file

  1. Open FreeYourMusic and pick File Backup as the service you move from.
  2. Tap "SELECT XLSX FILE" and pick your file. Both .xlsx and .xls files work.
  3. Choose the service you move to.
  4. Under "Choose file columns", tell FreeYourMusic which column is the title, the artist and the album.
  5. Turn on "Skip first row" if the first row holds column names, not a song.
  6. Check the preview and tap "Begin transfer".

The title column is required. The artist and album columns are optional, but they make the matches much better. If your columns are called "name", "artist" and "album", FreeYourMusic picks them for you. One file becomes one playlist, named after the file.

Can I export only the songs that did not transfer?

Yes. A transfer can export its missing and failed songs to an XLSX file, so you can look for them by hand. Missing songs and how to export them.
