Transfer into an existing playlist, Force recreate, and playlist names

On this page5 sections ▾

By default FreeYourMusic makes a new playlist on the service you move to. You can also send the songs into a playlist you already have there, rebuild a playlist from scratch with Force recreate, and see why very long playlists are split.

New playlist or existing playlist?

When you choose where a playlist goes, a badge tells you what will happen:

  • "Creating new playlist": FreeYourMusic makes a new playlist with the same name on the new service. Nothing you already have there is touched, also when you already have a playlist with that name.
  • "Using existing playlist:" followed by a name: FreeYourMusic replaces the songs of that playlist, which you already have on the new service, with the songs of your source playlist.
  • "Already being synchronised": this playlist is already part of one of your transfers.

FreeYourMusic never adds songs to a playlist only because it has the same name. When you do not pick a playlist, you get a new one. Later syncs of the transfer go into that new playlist, so a second one is not made.

What happens when I use an existing playlist?

Transferring into an existing playlist replaces its songs with the songs of your source playlist. FreeYourMusic empties the playlist you picked once, then adds the songs of your source playlist. The playlist itself stays: its name and link do not change.

With Auto Sync, FreeYourMusic does not empty the playlist again. Songs you add to it by hand after the transfer stay.

Some services do not let apps remove songs. On those, FreeYourMusic cannot empty the playlist: the transfer either says that the playlist cannot be cleared, or adds the songs of your source playlist next to the songs that are already there. For a clean copy on such a service, choose "Creating new playlist".

Liked songs, albums and artists never go into a playlist. They are added to your library on the new service.

If you see "Clearing playlist failed", the new service did not let FreeYourMusic prepare the playlist you picked. Tap "Try Again", or tap "CREATE NEW PLAYLIST" to send the songs to a new playlist instead.

Force recreate a transfer

Force recreate empties the destination playlist and writes every song of the transfer to it again from scratch. Use it when the destination playlist got out of shape, for example after many edits by hand. Songs you added to the playlist by hand are removed too.

Force recreate a transfer

  1. Open the transfer in FreeYourMusic.
  2. Open the transfer options.
  3. Choose "Force recreate transfer".
  4. Read the "Recreating transfer" message and confirm.
  • The playlist itself stays the same: its link and name do not change.
  • Songs you fixed with Rematch stay the way you picked them.
  • Some services do not let apps remove songs. Then FreeYourMusic cannot clear the old songs, and you have to remove them yourself. Some services also do not let apps remove liked songs: then Force recreate adds the songs again and the liked songs that are already there stay.

Why was my playlist split into two?

Some services limit how many songs one playlist can hold. When your playlist is longer than that, FreeYourMusic fills the first playlist up to the limit and puts the rest into more playlists with a number after the name: "Road trip", "Road trip 2", "Road trip 3".

These are the playlist limits FreeYourMusic knows about:

ServiceSongs per playlist
Spotify10,000
Pandora5,000
YouTube Music5,000
Amazon Music2,500
Deezer2,000
Qobuz1,000
SoundCloud500

The extra playlists belong to the same transfer, so you manage them in one place.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I have a duplicate playlist on the new service?

Each transfer makes a new playlist unless you pick an existing one. A playlist with the same name is not reused. If you transferred the same playlist twice with "Creating new playlist", you get two. Delete the extra one in that service, and next time pick the existing playlist.

Does Force recreate change the playlist link?

No. The playlist stays the same, including its link and name. Only the songs inside are removed and written again.

Can I merge the split playlists into one?

Not on a service that limits playlist length. The limit is set by the music service, not by FreeYourMusic.

Will FreeYourMusic delete my playlist on the old service?

No. FreeYourMusic never changes or deletes anything on the service you move from.
