How signing in to a music service works

On this page7 sections ▾

To read your library and add music to it, FreeYourMusic needs your permission at each music service. For most services you give it on the service's own sign-in page, so FreeYourMusic never sees your password.

Official sign-in (OAuth)

Used for Amazon Music, Apple Music, Audiomack, Audius, Boomplay, Deezer, Qobuz, SoundCloud, Spotify, Tidal and YouTube.

The app opens the service's sign-in page. You sign in there and approve the permissions the service shows you. The service then gives FreeYourMusic a token: a key that lets it read your library and add music, without your password. The short code that hands the finished sign-in back to the app expires after 30 seconds.

Sign-in page inside the app (cookies)

Used for JioSaavn, VK Music and YouTube Music. These services have no official sign-in for apps like ours.

The app shows the service's own sign-in page. You sign in there, and the app saves only the cookies the service sets. As the app puts it: "We do NOT store, nor see, any passwords."

Username and password

Used for Pandora. You type your username and password in the app, and the app sends them straight to the service. It keeps only the sign-in token the service returns, not your password.

Where is the sign-in kept?

Depending on the service, the sign-in is kept in the app on your device, on our servers, or both. When our servers save a sign-in, they save it encrypted with AES-256-GCM.

Why do I have to sign in again?

Services end sign-ins from time to time, for example after you change your password or when a token expires. The app then shows "needs reauthentication", "You've been logged out of" the service, or "RELOGIN" next to a transfer.

Sign in to a music service again

  1. Tap the message, or open the Profile tab and go to "Connected accounts".
  2. Open the account that needs attention and sign in again on the service's page.
  3. Your transfers carry on with the new sign-in.

What happens when I disconnect an account?

  • The account is removed from FreeYourMusic.
  • You cannot start new transfers with that account.
  • Before you confirm, the app tells you what happens to the transfers that used the account.
  • Playlists already on your music services stay there. Disconnecting does not remove them.

The steps are in connected accounts. To remove FreeYourMusic completely, also remove it in the connected-apps or privacy settings of the music service.

Frequently asked questions

Why does FreeYourMusic open a browser or a sign-in page?

That is the service's own sign-in. You sign in with the service, not with us, so your password stays between you and the service.

Does FreeYourMusic know my password?

Not for services with an official sign-in or a sign-in page inside the app. For the services that need a username and password, the app sends them straight to the service and keeps only the token it gets back.

What can FreeYourMusic do with my account?

What you approved on the sign-in page: read your library and add playlists, songs, albums or artists. It does not remove music from the service you are leaving.
